Saint Mary’s PRIMARY SCHOOL
School Policy for Healthy Breaks and Lunches
The following policy has been devised in association with parents, pupils, staff and the school’s Board of Governors. Healthy habits started at a young age can bring a lifetime of benefit!
Break - Children are expected to be provided with a healthy break such as fresh fruit, carrot sticks, bread sticks, water or milk. Children may also have a sandwich with a low fat and low sugar filling such as tuna, egg, chicken or ham. We will also permit yogurts at breaktime. At present we are also permitting cereal bars but NOT chocolate covered cereal bars or those coated in sugar. We are also permitting cheese strings.
All crisps, corn snacks, chocolate bars, biscuits, fruit winders, fizzy drinks and sweets are not permitted. We encourage parents to ensure that their child has an appropriate breakfast before leaving for school in the mornings.
Lunch - School dinners are provided by the ELB and are well balanced throughout the course of the week. Children taking packed lunch are also expected to have a balanced diet and therefore crisps and sweets should be limited.
Water - Children are encouraged to drink water in class using drinking containers with non-spill sports tops. These may be filled up during the school day using the drinking water available in all classes.
Health Education - Children are reminded regularly about oral hygiene and the importance of a well balanced diet in order to keep our teeth and bodies healthy. This may include visits from dentists, doctors and other health professionals during the course of the year. Our school will organise specific healthy eating and healthy lifestyle based activities each school year.
Monitoring - Our school’s healthy eating policy will be monitored during the year by heath professionals from the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust and during a school inspection by a nutritionist with the Education and Training Inspectorate.
